What is a cult? Or what makes a church a cult?

how can we even expect to hear from God when we don’t even care to listen to what He’s said before.

Isn't the simplest way to put this is, if their doctrine says you can only be saved by being a part of their church, and not solely on Jesus Christ?  I'm sure there's more to it.  I also need to dig into this.  Frown

That's why we learn about World Religions (and Cults) in Youth Sunday School in 2 weeks! Woot.   Laugh

I think it starts when God's word is taken out of context (for whatever reason) and then doctrine is then form from that. And then more rules and beliefs are cumalitively added based on the incorrect context of the foundational doctrine.

2 Timothy 4:3
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Another verse when Paul was writing to Timothy about “The Love of money”:

1 Timothy 6:3-6

3If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

Yea, I totally agree belle.

The first sign is when they are suggesting dependency on anything other then Jesus as the means to salvation. Number one!

And if anything comes after that…

then I wouldn't be shock. They already missed the starting point.

We should also distinguish what is doctrine and what is “taste/style” because of a certain style.. loud(er) music, drums, jumping, raising hands, etc are styles.

doctrine = just a teaching.or set of beliefs

SOUND = (adjective) free from decay, based on truth or valid reasoning; accurate, reliable. (dictionary)

i guess this can also stem to “what is sound doctrine?” because we need that to differentiate truth from fiction.

Another way is to READ THE BIBLE with the Holy Spirit as guidance and without bias (because of what someone says). Challlenge teachings and learn (different from rebelling) and don't piggy back off Pastor's faith, learn, test yourself and have your own faith.
