wow! awesome question! this bugged me for a while too. thanks mikee!
Jesus said that the Father is greater than Him not to show that He's not God but to show that He was also a man and as a man, like us, he was subordinate to the Father.
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. [ Hebrews 2:9 KJV ]
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashiona as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. [ Philippians 2:5-8 KJV ]
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. 9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, [ Colossians 2:8-9 KJV ]
again Jesus wasn't denying His deity. He was acknowledging that He was also a man so as a man He's subject to God's laws so that He might be able to buy us sinners from the law.
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. [ Galatians 4:4-5 KJV ]
